Once an individual has established eligibility, they can proceed with registering for USMLE Step 1. It's crucial to note that prior to registering, individuals must confirm their eligibility status.

In addition to ECFMG certification, USMLE results are also leveraged during the residency selection process, as well as by undergraduate medical schools for curriculum assessment and graduation decisions. Furthermore, state licensure boards utilize the USMLE to provide independent, valid, and reliable assessments that support their responsibilities in granting primary licenses to practice medicine.

Recently, the ECFMG has expanded its pathways system, and both organizations will work with others to find new ways to incorporate essential skills into the education and licensure system. There are no plans to bring back Step 2 CS, which was suspended due to the pandemic. The USMLE Step 1 and Step 2 CK must be successfully completed in order to obtain ECFMG Certification.
